The Story Behind Splash Band

Every great band has a story… and ours started with a few friends, a crazy idea, and a whole lot of passion for music!

For a few months, some of us had been talking about getting together—not to become a band, not to become famous, but simply to have fun, play some music, create a unique blend of Sinhala Baila, and bring some of the old hits back to life!

Then came the day that started it all…

February 22, 2025 — The Birth of Splash Band!
We finally decided to meet up at Taj? Wait—Talgators on Merivale!

Anura, Roshan, Champika and Sheltan got together, while poor Samith was sick at home.

We started throwing around possible names for the band. To make things interesting, we wrote the names on little pieces of napkin, put them into a jar, and asked our beautifull waiter to pick one.
She reached into the jar…

And the name she pulled out was… “SPLASH BAND”!

And guess what? That name was written by Champika!

And just like that, Splash Band was born!

From an Idea to a Real Band
We decided our next step was to meet at Roshan's house on the 30th of March 2025 and start practicing and we did it. Check out our very first FaceBook post!

But there was one small problem…

We didn't have a lead guitarist.

We didn't have a keyboardist either!

So the search began!
We reached out to Kalpa in Toronto, and he stepped up to the challenge. Not only did he agree to play with us, but he drove all the way from Toronto to Ottawa—many, many times—just to practice with the band!

Meanwhile, we managed to convince Sumudu to join us on keyboards.
And convincing Sumudu wasn't exactly easy!

We had to use our good hearts, charm, persuasion—and probably a little bit of serenading!

But eventually… he said YES!

And the rest, as they say, is history!

And Then Came Tharusha…
Sometimes Kalpa couldn't make the trip from Toronto, and that's when Tharusha putha would step in, often coming along with Sumudu and giving us a helping hand. We quickly realized something…
This guy wasn't just helping us out—he had something special!

So we decided to make Tharusha part of the band's shared lead-player role.
And today…

He's becoming a real star!

From a few friends simply wanting to get together and play music for fun, Splash Band has grown into something much bigger than we ever imagined.

Three Music Videos… and Counting!
By September 2026, we've already released three music videos, each with our own Splash Band twist:

1. Pinna Male — Reggae Version
Bringing a classic into a fresh reggae groove!

2. Liyathambera — Cha Cha Cha Version
Taking a beloved Sinhala song and giving it a completely different dance-floor flavour!

3. Maa Muva Agin — Cha Cha Cha Version
Another classic reimagined with the unmistakable Splash Band touch!

And this is only the beginning!

From napkins in a jar at Talgators to music videos, live performances, and a growing audience, the journey has been incredible.
Most importantly, we've had fun, friendship, laughter, music, and a shared passion for keeping great Sinhala music alive.
